Project Overview

0.1

SLIME Agency, is a two-year-old composer agency in Stockholm that offers services in sound design, composition, songwriting, and music production.

You might wonder why they came to us. Well, in 2023, 73% of businesses have a website, making it essential for Slime Agency to establish a strong online presence (Haan, 2023).

Our objective was to design and develop a portfolio website reflecting SLIME's identity and work while considering user experience and feedback from the client and front-end team.

Our team was multifunctional. We worked in a remote collaboration between a UX team of 4 designers and a development team of 4 Front-End Developers, along with Anna Wester, SLIME's owner.

In this team, I was responsible for testing the information architecture and creating a user test. In terms of team dynamics, I positioned myself as the product owner and participated in designing the webpage.

A good Information Architecture as MVP.

The first challenge came pretty early, our question was how might we succeed in conducting research while providing visual support the earliest.

I understood that scoping the user audience was not the strategy in this project because the website was a new product which means the first user audience will never be the final. However, we could at least work on good information architecture to permit good usability.

We decided to build the website’s architecture in a workshop with FED and Anna, together (we used it as a hypothesis to validate through the three jacks).

Do we have time? Of course not: learning to shuffle research and design.

The first challenge arose early on, as we wondered how we could conduct research while providing visual support as quickly as possible.

I realized that scoping the user audience was not the ideal strategy for this project, as the website was a new product, meaning the initial user audience would likely evolve over time. However, we could still focus on developing a solid information architecture to ensure good usability.

We decided to create the website's architecture in a collaborative workshop involving the Front-End Developers (FED) and Anna (SLIME's owner). We utilized this workshop as a hypothesis to validate through the three jacks.

Loading time consideration for better user experience.

We initially wanted to use a lightbox to showcase each composer's works, but our front-end developer presented us with our third challenge. We were using Vimeo as the content source for the Content Management System (CMS), and if we used the lightbox, the videos would load, potentially reducing the user experience.

To address this issue, we opted for a grid-style video layout for the composer page. In turn, we also implemented a biography for each composer, as requested by both clients and users.

However, videos tend to be more attention-grabbing than static images, so we compensated by adding a video thumbnail to the homepage to make it more attractive and engaging.

I would like to know more about the composer not only his work but also his background or style for example.

Reflection

In a perfect world with endless resources...

In order to further improve the final version, I would conduct a user test with users from SLIME's network, perform an accessibility audit, and explore ways to better showcase SLIME agency's work process on the website.

To conclude, I would like to share my 'wow' moment from this project. The co-creation workshop proved to be incredibly efficient, and I cannot emphasize enough how much it strengthened our project by bringing together diverse perspectives and saving valuable time.
